With everyone off for the weekend we decided on a hike, mostly us girls, and made the guys come along. Black Butte is a hike that Morgan, Ethan and I had attempted previously but failed to find the trailhead and then ran out of time. So always in the back of our mind we decided to revisit this hike. I did some more research on the hike and one previous hiker recommended "just" starting from Camp Sherman and hiking up. Well on the map that made sense, less driving up the rutted out road trying to find a crowded parking lot and trailhead.
Little did we realize that this would double our hike, which none of us had packed nearly enough water or food for. Once we found each other we immediately took an off course route right up the mountain to get to the first trail, this should have been our first red flag!
I didn't pack any lunch since plans were to do a nice 3 mile hike and then head to 3Creeks just down the road for lunch. Mo and Kylee made lunches but left them in the car. Ethan had a large coffee and then emptied 💩before he left the house - you learn a lot about each other when your on a life and death excursion 😜 and his way of retaliating for being on this hike
this is heading up still, I think we'd eaten most of the trail mixes and granola bars that we had found at the bottoms of our hiking bags by this point - poor E, we thought we were gonna lose him on this hike.
Mitch up front, powering through w Huck.
This was almost to the road that takes you right to the trail head. we were at 3+ miles up hill and just getting to the starting point! Which was another 3 mile up, until the top!
We really did try and stay positive, enjoy the views, plus we're all pretty stubborn and we were bound and determined to get to the top of this - finish what we started! This is the view of Sisters to the west. Another mile or so to go.
There were definitely swear words along the way, moments of wanting to quit, until one of us passed the other other up, possibly some tears - or maybe it was some dust in our eye. But we made it to the top, checked out the overlook they were constructing and had cabled down to the ground because of all the high winds. The old watch tower was pretty cool and the views were amazing.
We drooled over a picnic lunch some couple had brought up to enjoy! (who prepares like that?)
It was windy and cool but the sun sure felt good!
And headed back down - 7+ miles until we get to the vehicles, food and water!
We were all pretty glad J didn't come along, pretty sure he would have killed us all for making him go.
We're all glad we went, learned a bit about ourselves and each other and made memories we won't soon forget, again.
